7 Steps to getting started

Last blog post we worked on our goals (if you missed that one, here it is).

Now it’s time to set those goals into action.

These following 7 Steps explain exactly what you need to do get started – regardless of what your goals are.

For a detailed explanation, please watch this 20 min live video:

Or if you’d prefer a brief overview, keep reading…

1. Get a daily planner:

(members use our SBF Challenge Planner)

This could be a store bought planner or electronic.

2. Plan your day the night before:

When you wake up in the morning you want to know exactly what the plan is so you can jump into action straight away. The snooze button no longer exists!

You’ll be waking up with purpose, determination and excitement because you have a plan for the day and you know exactly what needs to be done and when.

This night time planning ritual needs to be an enjoyable experience – something you actually look forward to and which can easily be adapted into a lifelong habit.

3. Create a “TO DO LIST”:

This list is to include everything that you want to get done the next day. It doesn’t mean that it will all get done, it just means that in an ideal world, this is what you want.

This list is to be written on a blank piece of paper – NOT your planner! The planner is your official document.

Write down items for your list considering all areas of you life:

Work

Family

Home

Health

Social etc.

Don’t worry about putting things in order of importance yet, just write down everything that comes to mind.

4. Make the essentials official:

In your planner write down things you have to get done that are not flexible eg. The hours you’ll be working, picking kids up from school, any set appointments etc.

5. Decide what is most important:

Look at the remaining items on your To Do List and consider these questions:

What are my specific goals?

What are my life values?

What items will have the biggest positive impact on my life?

Does anything need to be completed ASAP?

Schedule in time to work on these big ticket items. Eg. Going for a run, starting a uni assignment, ringing your financial advisor to book an appointment etc.

6. Batching:

Look at your remaining To Do List and determine what items can get batched together eg. Stop at the post office on the way to food shopping whilst calling your Dad for his birthday.

Schedule these in to your planner.

7. Work on your masterpiece:

Have you got a big goal that may take weeks, months or even years to achieve?

Maybe you’ve dreamt about it but never had the time to start pursuing it?

Wouldn’t it be nice if you had 12 months off to work on your dream… someone paying your bills… looking after your family… attending to all those mundane tasks so you could just focus on your life’s purpose….

THAT’S

NOT

GOING

TO

HAPPEN!

So let’s move on…

You do have the time, it’s just not in one nice, big 12 month chunk of time.

Instead it’s available to you in anything from 5 min – 60 min opportunities every single day.

THE FINAL WORD

Expect that your day is unlikely to go 100% to plan and that’s ok. The trick is to be flexible and adapt to the disruption and changes as quickly as possible.

Other tips:

  • Turn your phone off or on silent when you’re working on important tasks.
  • Schedule the most important tasks early in the day when you’re fresh and motivated.
  • Regularly check your planner throughout your day and cross off items as you complete them.
  • Just stick to the plan! Stop making excuses, stop procrastinating, stop wishing for something better…

Start working on making it happen!

The final word belongs to Vincent Van Gough who is quoted as saying:

“Great things are done by a series of small things done together.”

Which is precisely what we focus on in my SBF Challenge – small steps toward gaining big changes!
