Should I be weighing myself?

The first question you should be asking yourself is:

What is my intention for wanting to lose weight?

Usually people’s responses fall into one of these 3 categories:

  • You want to look better.
  • You want to feels better.
  • For medical reasons.

Depending on what YOUR intention is for wanting to lose weight, will determine whether you should be weighing yourself (and how often) or not.

Medical Reasons: Yes!

  • Numerous research studies show that people lose weight faster and are more likely to keep the weight off if they weigh themselves daily.
  • These research studies are usually monitoring obese people or those with a significant amount of weight to lose. They do not take into consideration the effects on mental health.
  • Weighing yourself will be a daily reminder to stick to your goals.

To Feel Better: Maybe

  • Depends if you want to feel better physically or mentally and what type of personality you have.
  • If your intention is to feel better physically, don’t step on the scales. Use fitness tests eg. strength, flexibility, cardio or a self assessment to track your progress.
  • If your intention is to feel better mentally, then ask yourself how you honestly deal with failure – will stepping on the scales and not seeing the numbers you expect, affect your thought processes for the rest of your day?

To Look Better: No!

  • The number on the scales have absolutely nothing to do with how you look! People can be 80kg and 30% fat or they could be 80kg and be 8% fat – both bodies would look completely different.
  • Instead use clothing, girth measurements or a body composition scan to track your progress.

If you have healthy daily habits and you’re making good decisions, you don’t need to weigh yourself – weight loss WILL happen.
