Have you ever felt wired but exhausted? Or like you’re doing everything “right” but still not seeing results?
If you’re a woman in your 40s or beyond, and your energy, sleep, mood, or fat loss just isn’t what it used to be, your nervous system could be the missing piece.
Nervous system support is one of the most important (and overlooked) factors for women over 40.
What is the Nervous System?
The nervous system is our body’s master communication network. It controls everything from our heart rate and digestion to how we respond to stress, sleep, and recover from exercise.
It has two key branches:
- The Central Nervous System (CNS): the brain and spinal cord — the command centre.
- The Peripheral Nervous System (PNS):Â the messengers that carry signals between our brain and the rest of our body.
And within the peripheral system lies the autonomic nervous system, which runs the show in the background:
- Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS):Â our “fight or flight” mode – it revs us up in times of stress & activity.
- Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS): our “rest and digest” mode — it calms us down, aids digestion, recovery, and repair.
Why the Nervous System Matters More After 40
As we move into perimenopause and menopause, our levels of estrogen and progesterone begin to decline. These hormones do more than regulate our cycles; they also help support and regulate the nervous system.
With lower hormone levels, our body becomes more sensitive to stress. This can lead to:
- Higher baseline cortisol (stress hormone)
- Poorer sleep quality
- Increased belly fat
- Difficulty recovering from workouts
- Anxiety, mood swings, or brain fog
The nervous system becomes more easily overwhelmed, and without proper care, it stays stuck in “fight or flight.” This can cause a cascade of negative effects, even when we’re eating well and exercising consistently.
Signs Our Nervous System Might Be Out of Balance:
- You feel constantly tired but wired
- You’re not sleeping well
- You feel anxious, edgy, or easily overwhelmed
- You struggle to recover from workouts
- You’re gaining fat, especially around your belly
- You’re not getting results, despite your efforts
How to Support Your Nervous System in Midlife
There are practical, science-backed ways to care for our nervous system, and doing so can dramatically improve our energy, resilience, fat loss, and overall well-being.
Here’s what works:
1. Strength Train – Short & Intense
Short, focused resistance training 2–4 times per week helps build muscle and resilience without overloading your system.
2. Limit Long Cardio
Swap long, low heart rate endurance sessions for short, high-intensity intervals. HIIT will improve metabolic health and stimulate lean muscle gains without pushing you into chronic stress.
3. Prioritise Sleep & Recovery
Treat rest as essential. Sleep, stretching, massage, and time in nature all activate your parasympathetic system.
4. Try Breathwork & Mindfulness
Simple breathing techniques and mindfulness practices calm your nervous system and reduce cortisol.
5. Eat Enough – Especially Protein & Carbs
Undereating can stress your body. Protein supports recovery and muscle, while quality carbs help regulate cortisol.
6. Create Space for Joy and Downtime
Not everything has to be productive. Rest, laughter, and connection help shift your body into a healing state.
Looking after your nervous system is a necessity!
If you’re training hard, eating well, and still not getting the results you want, it might be time to shift your focus from just doing more… to doing what your body really needs.
